How to Care for and Clean Your Throws & Cushions

How to Care for and Clean Your Throws & Cushions

Throws and cushions are more than just home accessories — they add comfort, texture, and style to every room. But because they’re used so often (from cosy evenings on the sofa to extra support on the bed), they’re also prone to spills, dust, and everyday wear.

With the right care, your throws and cushions can look fresh and last for years. Here’s a simple guide to keeping them clean and in perfect condition.

Always Check the Care Label

Before washing, take a quick look at the care tag. Different materials require different cleaning methods — what works for cotton might ruin wool or velvet. Labels will tell you whether the fabric is machine washable, hand-wash only, or dry-clean recommended.

Regular Fluffing & Shaking

To keep cushions plump and throws looking fresh:

  • Fluff cushions daily to redistribute filling and prevent flat spots.

  • Shake out throws weekly to remove dust and crumbs.
This simple step helps your pieces maintain their shape and feel inviting.

Spot Cleaning for Spills

Accidents happen. The key is to act quickly:

  • Blot (don’t rub!) liquids with a clean cloth.

  • For stains, use a mild soap solution and gently dab the area.

  • Always test a hidden spot first to make sure the colour doesn’t fade.

Washing Throws

  • Cotton & synthetic blends: Machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.

  • Wool, cashmere, or delicate fibres: Hand wash in cold water or use a specialist detergent.

  • Faux fur or chunky knits: Often best cleaned by hand or dry cleaning to preserve texture.

Tip: Wash throws separately to avoid lint transfer and keep colours vibrant.

Washing Cushion Covers

Most cushion covers are removable — a lifesaver for cleaning.

  • Turn covers inside out before washing to protect fabric.

  • Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle.

  • Air dry rather than tumble dry to prevent shrinking or fading.

For cushions without removable covers, use a fabric-safe upholstery cleaner or a handheld steam cleaner.

Drying & Storage

  • Air dry flat to keep throws and cushion covers in shape.

  • Avoid direct sunlight to prevent colours from fading.

  • When not in use (like seasonal throws), store them in breathable cotton bags rather than plastic to prevent moisture build-up.

Refresh Between Washes

If your throws or cushions don’t need a full wash, try:

  • Lightly spritzing with a fabric freshener.

  • Hanging them outside for an hour to air out.

  • Using a lint roller to remove dust and pet hair.

With just a little care, your throws and cushions can stay soft, stylish, and inviting for years to come. The secret is knowing when to wash, when to spot clean, and how to store them properly.
